St. Mary’s Hospital is propelling central Virginia to the forefront of advancement in gynecological surgery. This Bon Secours hospital is the only medical center in the region that is designated by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) and the Surgical Review Corporation as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology™ (COEMIG™).
“The COEMIG™ designation signifies that the facility and surgeons are among the best in the specialty, and this is an important distinction in both patient and professional settings,” explains the Surgical Review Corporation, an independent nonprofit health care quality organization that manages the COEMIG™ program for the AAGL.
This distinction was not easily earned. St. Mary’s was asked to demonstrate the highest level of surgical care, and all aspects of the St. Mary’s minimally invasive gynecology program were assessed. The designation requires that a facility document continuous quality assessments, state-of-the-art surgical instruments, thorough staff training, and a wide range of surgical specialists who can be on site right away should any complications occur.
In addition to St. Mary’s Hospital, three Bon Secours-affiliated surgeons – Danny Shaban, M.D., Russell Handy, M.D., and Johnny Hyde, M.D., – were recognized with COEMIG™ designations.
“COEMIG™ participation will advance St. Mary’s in the adoption of new surgery procedures for hysterectomies, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, prolapse and other gynecologic conditions,” said Dr. Shaban, GYN Robotics director at Bon Secours Richmond Health System and a newly designated COEMIG™ doctor.
St. Mary’s is the only hospital in Virginia, and among just 15 hospitals nationwide, to provide Single-Site™ da Vinci® hysterectomy, one of the latest advancements in minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Shaban performed one of the first single-site hysterectomies in the United States at St. Mary’s Hospital.
The Single-Site™ da Vinci® hysterectomy requires a single, one-inch incision in the belly button. The surgeon controls the instruments and camera remotely while viewing the magnified anatomy and tools. The da Vinci® system provides enhanced mobility far beyond the maneuvering capability of human hands. Single-site robotic surgery offers the benefits of less pain, reduced risk of infection, faster recovery and an almost unnoticeable scar.
“We are immensely proud that St. Mary’s is exceeding clinical benchmarks through innovations that improve the health and well-being of our patients,” said Toni Ardabell, CEO of Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. “It is a high honor for St. Mary’s to receive this COEMIG™ designation.”
