Elected officials genuinely want to hear from their constituents to learn how they feel about specific legislation, confirmations, and general political issues. USA.gov provides contact information for nearly all national, state, and local elected officials.
When a legislator is inundated with requests from constituents to support or oppose a bill or nominee, it really does make a difference. The more calls, letters, and emails they get on a particular issue, the more likely it is to sway their yea or nay vote.
All methods of communication are effective and appreciated, but calls are definitely the best way to express your wishes to your legislators. Calls can be logged and tallied right away. Call the main office number for the legislator and tell the person who answers the phone that you want to voice your support or opposition for any law or person up for a vote.
It is not necessary to know the name of the legislation or the bill number when you call, but it makes it even easier for the legislator’s office to log your opinion if you do. You can easily search bills by topic online; they are indexed by the Library of Congress.
Participate in our democracy as often, and in as many ways, as possible. Your voice matters – but in order for your voice to make a difference, you have to use it!
